2007
Annual Water Quality Report
The 2007 Annual Water Quality Report
is now available for viewing. The report
presents the finding of the various monitoring programs in the Shingle
Creek/West Mississippi watershed, including streams, lakes, biological and
wetland monitoring. Ongoing monitoring
allows the Commission to evaluate the effectiveness of best management
practices, especially as TMDL implementation proceeds and provides a baseline
for reasonable water quality goals.

Rain Garden Education Workshops
and Coaching Seminars
(January 31, 2008) The Chingle Creek
and West Mississippi Watershed Management Commissions sponsored three Rain
Garden Education Workshops for local residents this spring. The workshops were taught and facilitated by
Metro Blooms. Attendance at the Maple Grove workshop on
April 19 was 49. Attendance at the Plymouth workshop on May 15 was 63.
Attendance at the Crystal
workshop on June 3 was 50. In addition, 35 attended coaching sessions in
Maple Grove and Plymouth in May.
The workshops teach attendees how to design and install rain
gardens, effectively use native plants, trees and shrubs and employ
eco-friendly lawn care practices including redirecting downspouts and
minimizing or eliminating fertilizers.
The coaching seminars help those who have attended the workshop get
individual help with their rain garden design.

THE
GREAT SHINGLE CREEK WATERSHED CLEAN UP
The ten cities that make up the Shingle Creek
and West Mississippi Watersheds —Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Champlin,
Crystal, Maple Grove, Minneapolis, New Hope, Osseo, Plymouth and Robbinsdale—celebrated
Earth Day with the 7th Annual Great Shingle Creek Watershed Cleanup. From Saturday, April 19 through Saturday,
April 26, hundreds of volunteers from Plymouth
to the Mississippi River lined the banks of
Shingle Creek, picking up everything from pop cans to car tires.
The Shingle Creek Watershed
Management Commission’s Chloride TMDL Implementation Plan and the
Implementation Partnership is one of five recipients of the American Public
Works Association’s National Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award. The partnership consists of the Commission,
the nine cities with land in the watershed, Hennepin County,
MnDOT and the MPCA.
The awards were presented at the North American Snow Conference in Louisville, Kentucky
April 13-16, 2008.
